Kanishka Gambir

Kanishka Gambhir is completing a masters of physiotherapy at the Institute of Rehabilitation Sciences, Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University, New Delhi. Her research investigates the efficacy of inspiratory muscle training in enhancing sitting balance and respiratory function.

Kanishka shares her experiences from the conference.

Attending ISCoS 2024 was an invaluable experience that expanded my research network and deepened my understanding of spinal cord injury (SCI) rehabilitation. It provided opportunities to connect with leading researchers, clinicians, and stakeholders across various SCI specialties, sparking ideas for future collaborations. Meeting my supervisor, Dr. Annie Palermo, in person, was a highlight. Engaging with the NeuRA group inspired me to explore the effectiveness of Abdominal FES in improving respiratory function—an area often underexplored in my home country. Dr. Gabi Mueller’s lecture on recent respiratory care technologies for SCI was particularly enlightening, highlighting strategies to optimize pulmonary care. I also gained valuable insights from discussions on sexual health and reproduction after SCI, especially the challenges faced by females attempting to conceive.

I presented preliminary findings from my master’s dissertation, which generated thoughtful questions and ideas. The conference exposed me to cutting-edge SCI rehabilitation technologies already making a difference. Networking events, particularly the conference dinner, facilitated lasting professional connections and friendships. I have already begun sharing these insights with my supervisors and teammates in India, confident that they will enhance our approach to SCI treatment and improve health outcomes in our country.
